Jean-Etienne Liotard belonged to a French Huguenot family which had settled in Geneva, He was a widely traveled artist. He lived in Istanbul from 1738 to 1742 and there he painted different art works and scenes of non-Muslim women wearing Turkish costume. His pastel technique was very smooth, colourful and flawless.
"For its beauty, vivacity, freshness and lightness of palette", Liotard wrote, "pastel painting is more beautiful than any other kind of painting”.
Jean Liotard had training in miniature painting and printmaking but he learned the pastel painting technique on his own.
At the age of 54 he married Marie Fargue who was 29 years old at the time of wedding. Their wedding took place in Amsterdam in 1756.
