About Henri-Edmond Cross

Henri-Edmond Cross was born as Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix(1856-1910) in France. He was a famous French painter as well as a printmaker. He is regarded as a master of Neo-impressionism and he played a very important role in shaping the second phase of this movement. He was a great inspiration and influence for many famous artists such as Henri Matisse. His works were vital for the development of Fauvism.

His life and career
His early works included still lives and portraits. These works were made in dark colors of Realism. He painted many landscapes as well. He met with many artists which were involved in the Neo-impressionist movement including Georges Seurat, Albert Dubios-Pillet and Charles Angrand but he did not get much influenced by their work initially. He continued working with impressionism. He also made en plein air paintings. In the later part of 1880s he painted many landscapes which showed the inspiration from artists like Claude Monet and Camille Pissaro.

Henry influenced many artists such as Andre Derain, Henri Manguin, Albert Marquet, Jean puy, Charles Camoin, Louis Valtat.
