Ulpiano Checa y Sanz (1860-1916) was a prominent Spanish artist known for his diverse talents as a painter, sculptor, poster designer, and illustrator. His full name was Ulpiano Fernández-Checa y Saiz, and he became recognized in the art world for his ability to blend both impressionistic and academic techniques. He often focused on historical themes in his works, capturing powerful moments with a vivid sense of drama.
Checa participated in numerous Paris Salons, where he earned multiple awards for his exceptional contributions. He began his formal artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he studied under the guidance of renowned artists. In 1873, he enrolled at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and later studied at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. One of his most famous pieces, "Invasion of the Barbarians," was created during his time in Rome. This painting, which tragically perished in a fire, earned him the gold medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1887.
In 1884, Checa received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Rome, where he remained for several years before settling in Paris around 1890. His career flourished in France, though he remained relatively unknown in Spain, aside from his acclaimed work "Invasion of the Barbarians," which won further recognition at the Vienna Exhibition of 1888. Despite its destruction, a sketch and black-and-white photograph of the piece survive, offering a glimpse into its violent depiction of riders storming through a Roman temple under a stormy sky.
Horses frequently appeared in Checa's works, often playing a central role in his large-scale paintings. Notable examples include "Roman Chariot Race" (1890), "Attila and the Huns" (1891), "The Redskins" (1893), "The Ravine of Waterloo" (1895), "Gallic Rapture" (1897), "Arab Fantasy" (1898), "Horses at the Trough" (1903), and "Between Two Oases" (1911).
Checa also explored classical themes, with works like "Saturnalia" and "The Amazons" standing out, as well as his depiction of the final moments of Pompeii. He exhibited extensively in France, where he won a third-class medal at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition and was awarded the prestigious Legion of Honor in 1894.
In addition to painting, Checa was a talented illustrator, contributing to books and magazines, including a work on the life of Napoleon. He also wrote a treatise on perspective in French and created sculptural works that brought to life the characters from his most famous paintings. His multifaceted career left a lasting impact on the art world, particularly through his dynamic portrayals of historical moments.
