Nicolai Fechin was born in Russia in 1881. He was known to be a Russian-born American Painter who was a famous portrait artist and was also famous for his various works which were centered on Native Americans. He graduated with high marks from the imperial Academy of Arts and travelled throughout Europe under a Prix de Rome, he later returned to his native called Kazan and became a teacher and painted his art works there.
His first art exhibition was held in the United States in the year 1910 in an international exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the year 1923, he migrated to New York with his family and worked there for few years and fell ill with tuberculosis and moved to the west to set himself and his family in a drier climate. Later he with his family got settled in Taos, New Mexico, where he became much interested and fascinated by beautiful landscapes and Native Americans. The adobe house in which he lived and lived in Taos is listed on the National Register of Historic places and is currently used as The Taos Art Museum. He later moved and got settled in Southern California after leaving Taos in 1933.
