Boris Grigoriev | Realist From Russia | 1886-1939

Boris Grigoriev was a Russian Realist Painter and was born in 1886 in Rybinsk. From 1903-1907, he studied at the Stroganoc Art School. Boris studied under Aleksandr Kiselyov, Abram Arkhipov and Dimtry Kardovsky from 1907-1912. He later became a member of Union of Impressionists group and strated exhibiting his work in 1909. He also became a member of the World of Art movement in 1913. This was the time when Boris also got very interested in literature and started writing noval named “Young Rays”.




Grigoriev lived for some time in Paris and studied there in an academy named Academie de la Grande Chsumiere. While he was in Paris, he got very influenced and impressed by Paul Cezanne. In 1913, Boris Grigoriev came to back to Saint Petersburg and joined Bohemian Scene in St. Petersburg. He was very close to many artists of his era, the poet Anna Akhmatova, Sergey Sudeykin, Velimir Khlebnikov to name a few. Boris sometimes painted portraits of his close artists friends too. Boris also showed much interest in the Russian Countryside too, he loved to draw village scenes and peasants life. 1916-1918 were the years when is rigorously painted the graphic arts and paintings which showed the strength of the Russian Peasantry and Village life. According to him, he showed the essence and existence of his country Russia in the period before the revolutionary upheaval. 1919 onwards Boris Grigoriev travelled a lot and lived in many different countries such as France, USA, Finland, Germany, Central and South Americas.


He wrote many poems too. In the year 1934, Boris published his poem Russia in American Russian language newspaper Novoye Russkoye Slovo. This poem by Boris showed the series of his paintings from Russia and later he also wrote poem America which was published after his death in 2003. However he died in the year 1939. Boris was one of the most well known and reputed artist of the Russia in the First half of the 20th century. He painted many complicated Russian Expressions in all his paintings.
