About the Painter:
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was born on 15th april 1452 in Vinci. His father was a legal official in Florence. As a great painter he proved his intellectual versatility in various areas: engineering, philosophy, mathematics, anatomy, science etc. Maybe, because of the versatility of his interests he could not finish much of his art work. Although his paintings are so few, drawings by Leonardo exist, compared to any other contemporary Italian artist.
Mona Lisa:
Which is the most famous portrait painting in the world? Everybody would agree with 'Mona Lisa'.
The painting displayed in the Louvre Museum, Paris, has been attracting visitors. What we call expression rests on the two feelings, the corners of the mouth and the corners of the eyes. Leonardo made these parts indistinct by merging into a soft shadow and this soft blending adds mystery to the smile. Mona Lisa's smile has attracted almost every possible interpretation by experts. Yet it may not express a particular emotion at all. According to Leonardo the portrait should not restrict itself to the imitation of external reality, but should contrive to translate mental activity into visual effect. Mona Lisa's invisible smile at the corner of her mouth and in her placing of hands too suggest emotional and bodily restraint.
There is an element of enigma connected with the landscape behind her. A bridge and a road both cut off on either end are the only signs of human life. Its a mystery.
